The Horizon of Khufu

Akhet Khufu

The original entrance to the great pyramid is on the North face, 15m high and surmounted by a double vault. The entrance is offset by 7.29m east from the center axis. The modern entrance is located several meters down. It is the forced entry of Caliph al-Mamum in the 9th century.

Khufu's ancient entrance

On the top right side of the double vault is an 11 register hieroglyphic inscription that dates to 1842. It was inscribed by the famous Egyptologist Richard Lepsius for the visit of Frederick William the Fourth of Prussia on the occasion of his birthday
